Who Is Brock Cantillo in ‘El Camino’? Here’s Why Jesse Is Writing to Him

The long-awaited Breaking Bad movie, El Camino, hit Netflix on Oct. 11, and we’re already in need of a refresher on one of the characters.

In the film, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) gives Ed Galbraith (Robert Forster) a letter to mail to Brock Cantillo (Ian Posada). We never see Brock, so it took us a second to remember how we know that name.

Silly us for forgetting that Brock is the kid Walt poisoned in Season 4 of Breaking Bad. Yes, Walt fed the young boy poisonous berries in order to manipulate Jesse into thinking that Gus was somehow involved.

Jesse eventually discovered the truth in Season 5, but not until after he ended his relationship with Brock’s mother, Andrea — a decision he made after talking to Walt.

Sadly, Andrea was killed to punish Jesse after he tried to escape from Jack Welker and his gang. Brock presumably went to live with his grandmother after the heartbreaking death.

“[Director Vince Gilligan] wrote that letter and then he wrote the script,” the actor revealed. “In the original draft of the script, that is how the entire movie ends — the voiceover of the letter. But that was sadly cut.”

He described the note as “the most honest, beautiful, caring letter imaginable — really, just pouring his heart out and saying he’s sorry.” Aaron is hopeful that fans will get to read it someday. “I’m begging Vince to allow me to release it,” he admitted, “but we’ll see if that happens.”

Ian Posada cried after watching his on-screen mom get shot in Breaking Bad.

Emily Rios, the actress who played Andrea, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013 that her Season 5 death scene wasn’t just emotional for her.

“[Ian’s] mother texted me right after the episode they killed me off, ‘Granite State,’ because she let him watch, and he was crying because they’d killed off my character,” the brunette beauty recalled. “I felt so bad, but I let him know ‘Hey, I’m OK.’ He’s such a sweetheart.”

But Emily credits Aaron for helping to break the ice during those first few days of filming. “Jesse is so good with kids, and that really is how Aaron is,” she explained to THR. “He put on his Aaron charm and started telling him jokes and asking him questions and getting him excited.”
