Wealthy shoppers are set to shrug off coronavirus at Harrods with pandemic-proof personal shopping

It is a shopping mecca for the rich and famous but Harrods, along with most of the world’s upscale department stores, has been closed for weeks.

Royalty, pop stars and Hollywood actors have been denied their regular fix of designer brands and carefully curated collections due to the global coronavirus related lockdowns.

But that is all about to change as advances in technology mean shoppers at the London store will soon be able to enjoy some remote retail therapy.

Located in the Knightsbridge district of central London, Harrods is rolling out over-the-phone personal shoppers.

From May 18, select Harrods customers will be able to remotely browse shelves that hold some of London’s most expensive items, including a £19,565 ($24,300) Ralph Lauren

bag for men and an £18,000 chinchilla coat for women.

As the huge London outlet looks to slowly return to business as usual, its next step will allow customers to shop in those of its 330 departments where they can practice social distancing.

Until then, customers stuck at home will have to shop through a small team of Harrods staff via smartphone, in what the store calls “remote assisted selling.”

The trial could see the iconic green bags of Harrods being carried out of the Knightsbridge storefront for the first time in weeks.

Harrods said: “We are taking this opportunity to explore, to test and to learn how we as a business adapt to changing circumstances, but every decision we make will be guided by our commitment to safety.”
