Wal-Mart unveils its top toy list and holiday layaway launch


Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is already gearing up for the holidays, unveiling a toy selection that includes more than 400 items exclusive to the retail giant, and announcing the launch of its layaway program on Friday.

Among the exclusives are a Star Wars collector figure, a Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice Batcave playset, and a Razor PowerCore E100 Electric Scooter. The number of toy exclusives this year is about the same as last year, according to a spokesperson.

vice president of toys, said the company was looking for unique items, “seeing a void” and looking to fill it. The retail giant also paired with brands to create new toys.

Exclusives are included on the company’s “Chosen by Kids Top Toy List,” a group of the top 25 toys chosen by hundreds of kid “consultants” aged 18 months to 12 years old, who were asked to play with a variety of toys and choose their favorites.

Among the selected toys are the Num Noms Lip Gloss Truck that lets kids make their own lip gloss, the Doc McStuffins Hospital Care Cart, based on the popular Walt Disney Co.

U.S. toy sales grew 6.7% in 2015, according to NPD Group data, generating $19.4 billion, one of the industry’s strongest showings in years.

Among the top-selling toy items of 2015 were a few names that are popping up on this year’s Walmart list, including Barbie, a Mattel Inc.

toy, and Star Wars, which will release its latest film, “Rogue One,” in December.

“We’re seeing kids shop in all categories,” Kehoe said on a media call. “So we’re not just seeing action and growth in any one category. Whatever your child is interested in, there’s a great toy in that category.”

The retailer’s pre-Labor Day weekend launch for its layaway program is around the same time as last year. There is no opening fee for customers to start a layaway account, and a minimum basket of $50. Items priced as low as $10 can be included in the layaway plan. The final day to make a payment will be Dec. 12.

Wal-Mart shares are up 16.5% for the year so far while the Dow Jones Industrial Average
