President Donald Trump retweeted a doctored video Sunday showing him knocking down Hillary Clinton with a golf ball, prompting another round of head-shaking and outrage from critics.
The GIF, which combines clips of Trump hitting a golf ball with Clinton stumbling on a plane — which happened in 2011, when she was secretary of state — had been posted by a vocal Trump supporter with a vulgar Twitter handle and a history of posting angry, disparaging rhetoric toward minorities.
“The President of the United States just retweeted a video vignette that imagines him assaulting his political rival. The man is unfit,” tweeted Walter Shaub, the former Office of Government Ethics director who resigned in July.
Others quickly chimed in, some comparing it to comedian Kathy Griffin’s anti-Trump imagery earlier this year, which was widely denounced by both conservatives and liberals:
Many were upset over the implied act of violence against Clinton. Just last week, notorious “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli had his bail revoked and was ordered jailed after Facebook posts that threatened Clinton, offering a bounty for locks of her hair. While Shkreli claimed it was a joke, the Secret Service opened an inquiry into the matter, and a judge agreed he was a danger to the public.
On Tuesday, Clinton released “What Happened,” her memoir of last year’s election, which topped Amazon.com’s
bestseller list this week. In the book, she called Trump “a creep”
Trump tweeted more than a dozen times early Sunday morning, including a number of retweets of pro-Trump memes, before traveling to New York for the U.N. General Assembly meeting. He also referred to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as “Rocket Man” in one.
