Just how stupid is our culture becoming? Is there going to be a point where the dumbing down stops, or are we just going to keep sliding until we end up with the collective IQ of kelp?
Oh, and if so, can Elon Musk hurry up and get that Mars rocket program up and running so some of us can get out of here first?
The latest example of rank idiocy is that Donald Trump and his zombified acolytes are calling Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” after the Native American princess.
I await with gloom the day the president starts calling Elizabeth Warren “Four Eyes” because she wears glasses.
The point is that at one point Harvard University, where Warren was a professor, listed her as part- Native American in some diversity profile. Warren has, or claims to have, a Native American ancestor. That claim has been disputed, and her opponents have suggested (without much evidence) that she gained an unfair career advantage as a result.
But the problem is that Trump and his acolytes have gotten the joke wrong, stupidly wrong.
I live in Boston. I used to be a columnist for the (conservative) Boston Herald. I’ve been following Warren’s career since long before she joined the Senate. I remember this joke when it first began. I believe it was first created by a colleague at the Herald.
And they didn’t call Warren “Pocahontas.”
They called her “Fauxcahontas.”
“Faux,” as in the French word for false, fake or artificial.
In other words, it was a play on words whose joke was that Warren had falsely claimed to be Native American.
“Fauxcahontas” was funny. Whether you like or hate Sen. Warren, to call her Fauxcahontas, as in a fake Indian, was a witty political joke. (Ann Coulter, who has her moments, said Warren’s “Indian name” was “Lies on Race Box,” which was also quite witty.)
But while Fauxcahontas was funny, Pocahontas is just stupid. It has no comedic element. No wit. No humor. No intelligence. It is just a fourth-grade playground insult. Trump might just as well greet Warren at the White House with an Indian war whoop, or by holding up a palm and saying, “How!”
It says a lot about the intellectual maturity of Trumpists and modern-day Republicans that they have embraced “Pocahontas” as an insult for Elizabeth Warren. Not only have they now openly embraced racism — at least with Obama they called him a “Kenyan” rather than the actual N-word — but they no longer feel any urge to talk or act like grown-ups.
I await with gloom the day the president starts calling Warren “Four Eyes” because she wears glasses.
When I was a kid growing up in the Hudson Valley, back in the 1970s, I remember sometimes listening as my dad and his friends talked about the big issues of the day: Vietnam, Watergate, inflation, the oil crises and so on. Back then, young boys wanted to grow up to be, and sound, like their dads. Today, grownup men and women, including the president of the United States, are happy to talk, and sound, like a bunch of 10-year-old kids.
It’s absolutely pathetic.
Like I said: Elon Musk, how’s that Mars program coming?
