Oops! Is Dr. Dre set to become the first hip-hop billionaire via a deal for Apple buying Beats Electronics? A Facebook video posted by R&B singer-songwriter Tyrese Gibson appeared to confirm it — but has now been pulled.
The expletive-ridden video selfie from Gibson featured Dre agreeing that he’s now “the first billionaire in hip-hop”.
Gibson — a former model, now a “Fast and Furious” star actor as well as an R&B artist — definitely got excited by the idea Forbes might have to revamp its “rich list”.
“How did I end up in the studio with Dr Dre ON THE night his deal went public that he did with Apple 3.2 BILLION!!!! The BEATS HEADPHONES JUST CHANGED HIP HOP!!!!!” Gibson said in his post.
MarketWatch pulled a screengrab from the now-gone video, which looked authentic to us, though a spoof/punking can’t be ruled out. A ripped version has been posted to YouTube, but it probably won’t stay there long:
Who pulled the video hasn’t been explained yet. Nor has the why, though it’s worth noting Apple hasn’t yet commented on reports of the deal, first surfaced by the Financial Times on Thursday.
If done, the deal would give Apple a subscription streaming-music service to help take on the likes of Spotify, which has gained as music downloads have faded. It would also pick up a high-end headphones and audio-speaker business, the first focus of the Beats company set up by hip-hop producer Dre and music industry veteran Jimmy Iovine.
